May is a wonderful time to go on holiday. School holidays and public holidays: different schools apply different holiday weeks in May (depending on how Easter and Ascension fall), such as the official May holidays and the preceding week or the following week (which then sometimes coincides with ascension ). Even Pentecost sometimes falls in May, but it is usually june by then.

Avoiding the crowds is best if you come between school holidays and public holidays for a week, midweek or Long Weekend or just a few days in May.
